Founded in 2001, Gothoma Diggings is one of the key diamond miners in the North West province of South Africa. Their off-highway
fleet consists mostly of Volvo A40D ADT Rockers that have a high
number of operating hours as the machines previously operated in
coal mines.

The start of the Gothoma Diggings business was also the start of their solid relationship with Delo® products. The challenge they faced was their need to find a reliable lubricant that could
i) provide the best engine protection possible,
ii) handle soot formation due to the nature of the business (multiple idle periods between load / unload services),
iii) deal with the extreme heat – which could cause the oil to thin – combined with increased amounts of dust, and
iv) provide a highly reliable oil analysis programme that allowed them to visualise engine oil performance.

With Delo® 400 Multigrade SAE 15W-40 and the right set of
servicing at 500 hours per machine, the engines’ lifespan increased.
The initial overhaul span proposed was between 16,000 and 20,000 hours. The actual performance of 28,000 – 30,000 hours with no overhauls resulted in savings of about R1,260,000 as the overhaul intervals were doubled.
